IRL Stats is a university project I submitted as part of my undergrad degree. The Media Design brief called for us to produce something based on various ‘Dark Patterns’ we had researched.
The pandemic was a goldmine for dark patterns, so I spent a lot of time trying to analyse those in a few games, apps, and general entertainment.
This led to the creation of IRL Stats: A game that is aimed to make dark patterns work more in
favour of you (the user). The hook: Gamify your life!
The idea is to make gamers more inclined to be productive in daily life, so that there are more rewards in game – Reminiscent of Pokemon GO, Tamagotchi’s, and Animal Crossing, for instance.
By using dark patterns (Daily bonus, for example) people would be more inclined to complete ‘dry’ tasks so that the more enjoyable ‘quests’ could aid their progress in gameplay.
